Read about ZFS and it's use of RAM for ARC.  This is freely given back by the 
ARC if something else needs it.

Did you give enough RAM in the VM so it doesn't page-fault.  Is this on the 
first boot or subsequent boots?

You have to enable virtual consoles to be able to use it.  Check out the 
virtual consoles forum.
