The 10 GbE is paired with a 10Gbe port on a VMware ESX 3.5 box
The 1GBe is through a 1GbE switch configured as a 4 port LACP group, which is used by a single port on the Vmware box. I tried GigE to a 4 port link aggregate and was not getting the results I hoped for so I bought two 10Gbe cards. Still not what I was after so I bought the SSD's.
I am even struggling to figure out why my GigE link is only running at 2-5M. I have only used the default values for networking because I don't know how to change anything else. For now I am trying to get 1 VM to work well.
The first thing I'd suggest is to increase the MTU to 9000 bytes.
I don't think that ESX 3.5 offers any sort of LRO, and TSO/LSO
is not enabled by default, so 1500b performance for 10GbE tends
to be rather miserable.
