Pretty standard desktop type machine but I threw in an old 3Com-905TX NIC into because the onboard nvidia nic didn't work with Opensolaris 2009.06. My other machine is running Vista SP1 x32 and using onboard broadcom nic. Both PC's are on same network going through same router and running 10MB cable internet.

I know different hardware but both typical desktop PC's. Unless the onboard broadcom nic in my Dell is significant improvement over the tried and true 3Com PCI nic, Opensolaris is getting killed in network speed.

First test I ran an online speed test that used java, Firefox for both PC's. The Vista PC ran that test 3x faster download and slightly slower up. Second test I downloaded the exact same 95MB file from some website. Vista showed 1.2Mb/s and finished it pretty fast. Opensolaris (after Vista finished) never really got about 300Kb/s and took about a minute+ longer.

This could be related to different socket buffer size ; download speed can at time be modeled by "socket buffer / round trip time"
