thanks for the advice. a bit more about my setup. the machine uses amd 4850e cpu with 8gb of ram in raidz2, with 8 wd green 1TB drives, and 1 wd 1TB black drive as the boot drive.
the file server is mainly used for storing photos and ripped dvds. when watching dvds directly from the server, i noticed that when im jumping around, ie. jump to the 30min mark, it takes a good couple seconds before it start playing again. doing the same thing with the dvd on my local drive does not exhibit the same issue. i think this is the one thing that bugs me most. thanks for the suggestion to read over ZFS Evil Tuning Guide.
