Hi David, > The classic tools for doing capacity planning measure > operation/transaction rate and time taken, rather > than resource usage. > > Once you've *done* the planning, then you correlate > that with the amount of resources you used and use > that to predict when you need to add more resources. >
Isnt utilisation Util=Busy/Time as part of normal Queuing theory parlance, therefore included as an important part in any capacity planning along with X(N) and R(N), throughput and reposnse time ? Resource utilisation should be part of any performance monitoring exercise of any data center. More from our Guerrila Capacity Planning class, I got the picture that a basic capacity plan could include: - performance monitoring (sometimes implemented using a commercial software, sometimes you appreciate your UNIX admin :) ) - performance analysis - trends, forecasting > The three programs which do the CP part are Teamquest > Model, BMC Perform/Predict and Neil Gunther's PDQ. The > first two are for engineers, the third for mathies. Not everybody has budget to spend and use commercial software. For small budgets and from case to case you can build a capacity planning model of your site using the starting examples from GCaP. > For papers and books on this, start with the > Teamquest site and view their webinar > http://teamquest.com/resources/webinars/display/30/index.htm > and if you don't mind math, follow up with Neil > Gunther's site, http://www.perfdynamics.com/ Right. I have been in GCaP class, kept by Neil Gunther and my questions actually come part of the feedback from the class, part from my side: - corestat integrated into Solaris. Customers as well asked about this and why is not integrated into (Open)Solaris. - nicrec Thanks, Stefan _______________________________________________ perf-discuss mailing list perf-discuss@opensolaris.org
