The file event discussed here in May 2006 is close to what I am looking for. 
Its only shortcoming is that a separate event is needed for each directory 
being tracked. A more useful interface would allow events to be received for 
all create/delete activity in a directory tree, starting from a given node. In 
his blog entry dated 27 Aug 2007, Prakash noted that the functionality (FEN) 
would be available in the Nevada build 72. As of 20 Aug 2008, our Solaris 10 
system, which our admin tries to keep current regarding patches, does not have 
FEN. Since our application runs on Windows, Solaris and Linux, and since 
Windows and Linux both have this capability, it would be great if we could use 
a more or less constant design across all the platforms we support. FEN would 
make that possible. If you know anything about the status of FEN or when the 
Nevada build 72 is coming out, I hope you will respond to this post. Thanks for
