Hi,
I also noticed that the RAM usage was excessive, the performance monitor
reports 426MB of RAM, when using just Firefox and Gaim, and another 41MB in
swap space.
You can check yourself the memory utilisation from mdb ::memstat.
You have already reported the figures.

Kernel 17569 68 14%

Firefox/Thunderbird/Open Office would need at least 512MB
outside of the OS. I would suggest you buy more RAM, if possible.
> My system:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67GHz)
512MB SD RAM
Well depends what are you planning to do with this box.
512 MB for JDS (Gnome) is very limited I would say.
I had 2GB and switched to FVWM2 instead of JDS, I have lots of terminals
opened.
So:
1. Try, if possible to allocate more RAM. Increase to 1GB.
You will see 100% a performance improvement.
2. Check CPU utilisation/saturation (learn how to use vmstat and
sysperfstat [1])
Cheers,
Stefan
