Sorry, 1.64alpha is the version I tried, not 1.62 as I originally stated. I can get it to compile cleanly with Studio 11, and with minor tweaks to the configure.in, it compiles with gcc. Both exhibit the parsing error, and all runs fail, and write their files in /var/tmp AND the location you specify with $dir.
