IMB backs SOS campaign

The worldwide piracy monitoring centre, the International Maritime Bureau
(IMB), has added its weight to the maritime industry's Save Our Seafarers
campaign, launched last month. The campaign is calling on seafarers and others
to urge their governments to take action to end piracy.
The IMB, which monitors piracy worldwide through its Piracy Reporting Centre
(PRC), points to the "huge escalation" in piracy off Somalia. "So far in 2011,
13 vessels have been hijacked by suspected Somali pirates, with a total of 243
crewmembers taken hostage. In addition, six crew were kidnapped from a vessel
that was hijacked and then left adrift in the Indian Ocean. Of most concern,
however, are the seven murders committed by Somali pirates."
Noting the increased maltreatment and even killing of captured crewmembers, IMB
Director Pottengal Mukundan urged other forces to follow the lead of the South
Korean, Malaysian and Indian navies and "commit greater resources to this
growing problem.
"We also urge national governments to increase the mandate of these forces to a
level of `no mercy' and push for greater prosecution rates."
