USTDA grant promotes secure trade

in indonesian maritime industry

JAKARTA, INDONESIA – (September 7, 2005) Promoting secure trade in the Indonesian maritime industry is the goal of a U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) grant awarded on August 25, 2005 to the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration (MMT) of Indonesia.  Specifically, the $358,000 grant will fund technical assistance for the MMT, working in collaboration with the Directorate General of Sea Communications (DGSC) of the Ministry of Communications of Indonesia, on the development and design of a system to produce rapid, accurate and verifiable identification documents for Indonesian seafarers that complies with International Labor Organization standards.

A signing ceremony to officially confer the award was held at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta.  Mr. Richard Rothman, Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy, and Mr. Tjepy F. Aloewie, Secretary General of the MMT, signed on behalf of the U.S. and Indonesian governments, respectively.  Director General of Sea Communication Harijogi from the Ministry of Communications signed as a witness to the grant agreement.

By strengthening the security associated with Indonesian seafarer documents, the grant supports the objectives of the Asian Development Bank’s Regional Trade and Financial Security Initiative (RTFSI), which was established under the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum to strengthen anti-money laundering efforts, combat the financing of terrorism, and enhance transport security.  In addition, the technical assistance program supported by the grant is designed to promote growth in the Indonesian economy by ensuring the health of the country’s maritime industry.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency advances economic development and U.S. commercial interests in developing and middle-income countries.  The agency funds various forms of technical assistance, feasibility studies, training, orientation visits and business workshops that support the development of a modern infrastructure and a fair and open trading environment.  USTDA’s strategic use of foreign assistance funds to support sound investment policy and decision-making in host countries creates an enabling environment for trade, investment and sustainable economic development.  In carrying out its mission, USTDA gives emphasis to economic sectors that may benefit from U.S. exports of goods and services.
