Check it with another lens. If it is the pressure plate, you should have the same problem with a similar lens with the same focal length and aperture. DOF might have kept you from seeing it before.....

It sounds like that plate that presses against the film may have gotten bound up somehow. If the spring isn't working properly on one side then it could cause the effect you're experiencing.
