I've seen a lot of messages that seem to have started, as usual, in reaction to a flow of rubbish from Canada. I only get part of the picture because I have a filter on what seems to be the main stream. There have been many insults exchanged. I find this distasteful and the rot has spread sideways. People have started insulting one another about unrelated things - like their signatures.
Most people use descriptive signatures for a specific purpose. My own is designed to differentiate me from two well known, and rather famous Don Williams's. One is a country and Western singer, the other a well known author and illustrator of children's books. And there are others as well. I suggest that if a member of the list chooses to describe himself in detail and include the address of his institute, or even a phone number, he has a reason. There is no need for insulting remarks. I am a member of several lists where the signatures include all the writers degrees - often a string of them. It helps identify the writer and often also in the assessment of the contribution. By the way, I've never heard anyone described on this list as a 'Troll'. On Usenet groups the term is commonly used for a pattern of behaviour that I hope has not started to infiltrate this list. If it does there is a case for cancelling an offender's subscription.
