I sincerely believe this is a misconception. Along the lines of why it would be in the interest of car radio manufacturers to get those stolen out of cars and expensive bicycles stolen in the Netherlands. The truth is, that this is hurting their business, because you are not going to buy another expensive type again. In the case of an un-reliable product, you switch to the competition, not to their next product. When you are satisfied with your 6MP camera, you might consider an upgrade when the 15MP comes out, or buy new glass. If it breaks down real soon however, I don't think you will replace it so easily with a new model from the same manufacturer. I don't believe in pre planned obsoleteness by deliberately construct something to break after a while. I do believe they might or might not take the effort to make it more robust in the design phase. If the reliability doesn't meet the expectations of the customers, they will hurt in the long term, not to mention the legislation like the UK and the Netherlands giving the consumer rights beyond the warranty period.
