I used to own a Manfroto monopod and took it with me all the time. I found it useless unless it was as a walking stick. That also seems to be the advice given in some Basic Photography books. I may be wrong, I usually am, but I think they are really just for professionals that shoot professional sports like football or tennis, etc and use long heavy lenses. That way, it adds stability, but also gives your arms a bit of a rest.
