Hi Susi,

Welcome to the PDML. The answer to 3) is they are trying to copy the
poor support for Pentax products in Texas, Wyoming, Nevada, Connecticut,
Maine, etc., etc..

I've bought all my current gear without ever having held any of it
before hand.

As far as the zooms go, I don't have any yet. I have heard that Pentax's
entry level zooms are mostly poor, as are apparently most of the entry
level offerings from Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Vivitar, and the others. The
real reason to buy Pentax cameras is because Pentax cameras accept
Pentax glass. The bodies range from acceptable to great, and the good
lenses are really good. Don't forget to look at Pentax's better quality
zooms or even their superlative primes while you are considering the
Tokina.

Check out the PUG (Pentax Users Gallery) and note the lens used with any
images that catch your eye. You'll find some Tokinas, Sigmas, Tamrons,
Ricohs, Vivitars, Xenitars and a heap of really good Pentax lenses. PUG
is at http://pug.komkon.org .

Have fun!
