I checked out the loupe today. Its not too bad at all - a little bit of barrel distortion and the sharpness & contrast looked good, although I didn't have anything to compare it with. The eye relief wasn't quite as good as I anticipated, and because I wear glasses I lose a little bit off the extreme corners and get just a touch more distortion.
Having thought a bit more about my needs I will probably stick with my 3x loupe for previewing slides, and the 10x for checking sharpness.
