Around the beginning of the year I bought my first (functional) slr. After a lot of price comparisons and careful fiddling in stores, I came to the conclusion that I had to have a Pentax. The ZX-7 was at the top of my budget but it didn't have DOF preview and the interface was a little weird to me. Then I revised my budget and splurged on a used ZX-5n. I love it, mainly for its old skool interface and oh-so-sexy design.
I'm fairly new to slr photography, but I use manual focus more than auto, even with an autofocus lens. I certainly don't miss program modes, of which the 5n has none. In retrospect, I might have been happy with a classic body like a Super Program or K-something. But then again, I really like my camera and may never buy another body again, unless it's an LX for like $50. Anyway, since the ZX-L is based on the ZX-7, I personally wouldn't go for it. This is highly subjective, of course. I'm glad the ZX-L wasn't out in December, or I would have had a really hard time deciding. Maybe, and this is just a thought, since your friend really liked your Super Program she might consider an actual Super Program instead of a new body. Have fun shopping!
