Hi Annsan, >> I am not a religious chap. In fact although I was once a committed >> Christian for a few years when I was 18, I am now an atheist. > >You appear to have been 18 for a long time :) >starting at 18? or finishing at 18? With me it was the latter :)
Me too. [snip] >It is late here too. No offense taken - rather interesting stuff, actually. >But I do think >that we have long underestimated the minds of animals and are just recently >beginning >to give them a bit more respect. I take all your points on board (and there were plenty of them ;-) but I still come back to this business about humans and animals. Someone (privately) mentioned that when I say it's basically 'humans and the rest', that dogs probably think it's 'dogs and the rest' - but I disagree. Humans are the only beings that have the capacity to reason. Yes, I know about chimps and dolphins and the rest - don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they aren't intelligent - just they lack this very human trait. Without now wanting to get into a definition of 'reason', let's just say that this is what I believe, and in no way reflects on what may or may not actually be! I, too, have seen a dog's face with the most amazing expressions on it, and have been totally overwhelmed. I can understand where anyone who calls such a picture a 'portrait' is coming from. Personally, I do not. That's just my own personal choice and I have based it on my life experiences (so far). BUT judging from how my religious views have swung so violently opposite in the past, I'm obviously open to change ;-) Interesting subject, thanks Annsan.
