I did that trip when I was 10 ;-) Canadian Pacific. One one short leg up in the Rockies I got to sit in the cab. I’ll never forget the sight of deer jumping along fresh snow in front of the train. Every so often the engineer would reach into a large coolbox under his seat and pull out a can of distilled water which he would open - all with one hand and in one motion - and gulp down.
