A floating dock... well... it floats. It can be submerged partially to
let the vessel drive in and then raised again to lift the vessel out of
the water.

A dry dock is a basin with a gate that can be pumped dry once the vessel
is inside. Like a lock with a gate at one end only.

Am I making sense?
