I have, and occasionally use with my non-metered cameras, a Gossen Lunasix light meter; selenium cell, so it doesn't need batteries, and can measure a quite range of lighting conditions in daylight. No bigger than a cell phone, so easy to carry in a pocket. Don't know if it would be possible to buy one now, even second-hand would be rare, I think.

It is a technique that basically locks you into static subjects which can stand making multiple exposures over a minute or two as you swap equipment around, and also carries the cost of having to lug around yet another camera. Seems less than appealing to me. I usually carry the minimum of gear, and particularly when I'm carrying a largish and heavy camera to begin with.
