Thanks, Ann! The last shot is of “The Bowl” in Clark Park. To make a long and complicated history short, Mill Creek used to flow through it on its way to the Schuylkill River, about a half-mile farther along. There were docks where barges were unloaded, and during the Civil War wounded soldiers were also brought here by barge, as the Satterlee Hospital was about 100 yards to the north.
Generations of city employees have tried to get grass to grow in The Bowl, but it is lousy clay soil and is heavily used so all efforts have failed except on the slopes. The Bowl is used for dogs, sledding (when there is snow—not this winter!), a youth soccer league, and plays and concerts in the summer.
