It's not required, but with Apple's tendency to hold your hand, and not let go,
it defaults to saving everything to iCloud. I went through this recently and
since my computer has far more storage than I get free from iCloud, it took me
a while to figure out how to tell it "no thanks, I'll back up my own data thank
you".
