I went to the San Diego Zoo when I was 14 - 1964.

My family went to San Diego for "vacation" while my father attended a convention. I was the only person in my age group and there was nothing for me to do & no one for me to do it with

... so I went by myself; walked up to the zoo from the El Cortez hotel downtown (where the convention was being held). I don't remember much of Balboa Park, but the aviary at the zoo was the most marvelous thing I'd ever seen.

Ann, the park was not what we expected, but it wasn’t a disappointment. The
architecture and the museums were interesting and enjoyable (there is even a
photography museum!).

On our last day in San Diego (a Sunday), we got a ride to Balboa Park. It looks
large on the map, but most of the area is taken up with buildings (especially
museums), a zoo, a golf course, parking lots, and lots of deep ravines.

Herewith two views of (IIRC) the Visitor Center.
