Not entirely true.

When my girlfriend and I were caravan touring in North Wales
(with an itinerary set from information in the Good Beer Guide)
we ended up at one pub which was basically just the front room
of a house; beer was obtained via a hatchway to the kitchen
where there were a couple of casks sitting on a shelf.
The pub was a couple of miles up a hill (along a very narrow
road; there wouldn't have been anywhere to turn round).
When we walked in we got some very suspicious looks - not
only were we strangers, but one was a woman! (the only other
woman there was the person serving the drinks). When we asked
for two pints you could sense the tension in the room subside.
