Alan, They are indeed complete houses with no shortage of facilities. Most of them are visited each summer by their owners. Few are for rent. Also, as you guessed, some (mostly retired) people live there all the year around.
The sea they face is the Aegean and it is not large enough to allow formation of exponentially growing waves. However, unusually strong winds and small hurricanes (called Medicanes, I believe) started to appear with increasing frequency at our Mediterranean coasts.
