i've just bought a new-old tokina 400/5.6 at-x sd af in exc+++
condition from ebay japan. i have of course read reviews on the net
(Mark Cassino's note on the lens with the k3 was particularly helpful
and encouraging). it has a reputation for sharpness and also CA in high
contrast situations, which most reviewers say can be handled in post. i
hope i got a sharp copy.

and while i was waiting for it i was going through my archives and
here is a birding shot, not very good, from feb 2007, taken with the
*ist DS, which i had bought towards the end of 2006, and the kit lens:
