They are a lobbying group that sells insurance to support their salaries. Nothing evil about that. A good reason to join is if you want to lend your support to their efforts.
In my opinion, their record is mixed. I choose not to support them. I get a lot of junk mail; not sure if I am getting AARP stuff, but if I do it goes directly to the recycle bin. On the plus side, they were influential in getting the prescription drug coverage added under Medicare. On the negative side, they were unable to, or didn’t care to, eliminate various provisions which prohibit Medicare or any other government program (including TriCare and VA I believe) from using negotiated pricing or competitive bidding when purchasing drugs or medical equipment.
