All I know is the day I switched from a collapsing rubber hood to a solid,
thick metal one I face planted the lens into a hill when I slide.

And the metal one stopped me from having to pick pebbles out of my glass,
and the rubber (or any flimsier material, I'm sure) would nopt have.
