I have a firewire to thunderbolt converter that runs an older firewire
drive from the thunderbolt port on my iMac.
Try newegg for good mac hardware info and bits

What sort of USB and networking do they have? With an iMac, you really
need external drives, at least for backups, although with gigabit
ethernet, NAS may work.
"four USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire "800" port, built-in AirPort Extreme, and
Gigabit Ethernet, as well as an audio capable Mini DisplayPort, which
supports an external display up to 30" (2560x1600)."
I think this can accept any SATA3 HDD & I figure I could get a Macally
keyboard & mouse for it like I have for my Mac Mini.
Look on iFixit and see what mods they discuss and support for it.
How hard would it be to replace the missing HDD & install OS X?
Judging by mine, not terribly hard, just be aware that putting in an
aftermarket drive may mean that it doesn't have temperature sensors, and
may also mean that the fan is always on. I pretty much did that with my
24", then ended up giving the system to a friend a while later.
I was looking at hard-drives from the same place recommended for memory
upgrades in David Brooks Lightroom thread.
If that is of the vintage that you can use it as a thunderbolt monitor,
that would probably be a better bet.
Looking it up by S/N on EveryMac.com, it's mid-2010 & no mention of
Thunderbolt.
Or am I looking at biting off more than I can chew here?
What's your goal? At this point, my feeling is that the best deals are
the old Mac Pros that are actually expandable.
I don't really have a goal yet. I was just thinking about maybe getting
an iMac to mess with & this has a much lower price than a complete one.
