Gillette made his fortune designing stage sets lighting and special
effects equipment, as well as being an actor. He designed the castle to
look like a ruin from when viewed from the river valley below, for both
river traffic, and the railroad that ran alongside it. Of course this
is from the landward side but the design is uniform in appearance. In
an interesting aside, he also designed all the electrical switch plates
and switches, all of which are still in operation, apparently he was
better than Edison, in that regard as most original Edison switches have
been replaced.
