Larry, it looks like a butterfly pupa. I would carefully cut it off with a
razor blade & attach it to a safe overhang with superglue. It may have to
over-winter?

The caterpillar I photographed a couple days ago seems to have gotten
around to wrapping a cocoon. However, there seems to be a spider that
thinks it's a pretty nifty MRE.
