I've recently looked inside a couple of your basic dial type, non-mechanical timers.
I couldn't believe the simplicity, but it made real good sense who they're built.

For anyone who has a Radio Shack near by, all you'll need is (1) 555 timer IC, (2)
Relay, dpdt, (3) a box (4) appropriate switchs & knobs & sockets, (5) a capacitor or
two (6) a bunch of resistors, (7) a board to mount the circuit onto.

The basic design is inside a little book you can get at RS as well -- designing around
555 timers.

With specific resistor/capacitor combinations you get predictable time delays. Switch
between resistors and increase or decrease the time dealy.

For anyone interested in experimenting or a fun hobby project, one of these would be
an excellent project.
