I think it's a human thing. Here's a strange thing. I'm piecemeal reading a book at the moment, called Les Rencontres de Lucien Clergue (https://www.amazon.fr/Lucien-Clergue-ses-rencontres-Photographies/dp/2862344451).
I wanted to write that it was Les Rencontres de Jeanloup Sieff, but couldn't find any reference to that book, so I checked my copy. It means that for almost 40 years I have conflated these two photographers in my mind. It probably explains why I found it so hard to reconcile Sieff's nudes and the early photos by Clergue, and that is one of the reasons I bought the book. I think I met Clergue/Sieff in about 1980 when hitchhiking around Europe. He gave me and my gf a lift and we stayed at his place in Arles for a night and talked a lot about photography. I thought it was Sieff, but maybe it was Clergue - I don't think Sieff was particularly connected with Arles. I prefer Clergue's nudes to Sieff's, although I don't think they're his best work.
