They (painted turtles) are not overly timid, in that one can
sometimes get a little closer to one of them before it would have
slid off into the water.  In this case, however, the turtle was
sunning itself, sitting near the top of a mostly submerged log,
surrounded by lots of water.  And, I didn't want to get my tripod's
feet wet (not to mention my own - <g>).
