Hi Tim: I have rather limited experience with the 16-50, I was given one
to use by Pentax Canada to use for a few days prior to it's release. I
found it to be kind of big, kind of awkward, but optically very good. I
didn't like the plastic finish, but that doesn't speak to anything
beyond my questionable sense of esthetics.
My understanding is that it is still having problems wit the SDM motors
to this day.
I bought one of the 20-40mm lenses and in many respects I like it, in
some respects I don't like it. It's not huge, but it is a chunky lens.
If one looks at the specifications, it is about the same size as the
31mm lens, but the specs don't tell the whole story. The 31mm lens
flares out quite a bit at the front, where the lens diameter measurement
is taken, but it tapers back quite a bit less than a quarter of the way
back. The reality is, it is a much smaller lens than the specifications
imply.
The 20-40 doesn't taper, it's just a biggish lens.
I like the finish of the 20-40, and the optical qualities are superb,
and in keeping with the Limited optics. It has a new and improved AF
motor, apparently not SDM, so hopefully it will be more reliable than
the 16-60.
Having said that, I don't like mine enough to actually use it, and am
considering selling it.
