I love my 50-135 (I never checked its focusing ability though). IMHO, this lens is very good for portraits, especially candid ones, where you are shooting from a distance. It is also very reasonable when you are shooting people in relatively dim light. This lens is in my "main set" (along with 3 primes and 17-70) that travels with me practically everywhere where I take my DSLR. I even stopped taking 18-250 in favor of 50-135, when I am not very likely to need the long end of the zoom.
I am not sure if it is well suited as a "tele" lens for other types of work. I don't think it is good for macro either, but I never tried it in that capacity.
