Ken, there's no comparison between the smaller LED light units and a hotshoe flash; the flash is many stops brighter.
I compared my 160-LED unit with an AF540 flash using a lightmeter and got this: LED full brightness at 2 feet: F4.0 (125th sec, ISO 200) AF540FGZ (zoomed all the way) 1/1 at 2 feet: F90 1/64 at 2 feet: F11 F90 is not a typo. Focused flash is very bright.
