I was going to respond to your initial post on this topic, but you seemed
sure the onboard flash wouldn't be acceptable.
I shot all my vehicle/part inspections over 18 years without ever using
anything more than the onboard flash and in a few instances a ring flash
(for detailed fracture analysis).

I taped a little tissue over the flash to soften it.
Results are decent given how straight-on the flash to the flat surfaces of
the bell.
