my email archive has well over a million messages in it; it's not at all
painful; i just ignore them unless i need to search, and one of the best
arguments for OS X Spotlight is how quickly it searches email

filtering (Fastmail does this for me)

since i give each vendor an unique email address, i can easily tell which
signups have led to spam, etc.; i made a BuyDig purchase in December and
allowed them to send me promotional emails (which i Sieve into my
easily-ignored "deals" folder); i've just turned off that preference and i'll
see if i notice them sending anything further
