Thanks Mark. The flower was taken at a local nursery/greenhouse and I
didn't note the species, but I think it is some kind of Zinnia. (More
knowledgeable flower people, feel free to correct me).

I'm learning that one really needs to apply a bit of strategy to
shooting birds outdoors on sunny days. The best shots are with the sun
coming over your shoulder, fully lighting your subject. Thus, if
taking a birding walk in the woods in the early morning it would be
best to choose a path from East to West and in the late afternoon the
opposite. These Cardinal shots, unfortunately, are side lit and work
OK if the cardinal was facing the sun, but not so well when his head
was in shadow. I dislike fill flash outdoors (think it looks
unnatural) but that would be one obvious solution.
