I've seen several posts on various web discussion groups where incident meters are recommended as the only way to get a "correct" reading of the light falling on a subject. I've always thought that most of these writers had either never really used an incident meter or only used it under narrow conditions where it would work well.
Being an old guy that actually had to use an incident meter, I've always held the opinion that there is just as much technique required to interpret an incident reading as a reflected reading. The techniques are just different. Here is a video that finally talks about the differences. It's intended audience is videographers, but the basics apply to still photographers. <http://petapixel.com/2013/04/29/informative-tutorial-on-the-types-of-light-meters-and-how-to-properly-use-them/> This is said to be the first in a series of videos.
