Yes, I am sure Pentax knows what its customers want. They want P&S cameras in 35mm, APS, and digital. It is why they make anything else I can not understand. SLRs, 35mm or roll-film, just don't fit their obvious marketing bent. They sell a lot of binoculars and microscopes too. Though I imaging electron microscopes are eating into that segment now.
For what it is worth 35mm based 3MP digital SLRs have been around for more than a decade now. They are just getting down to where consumers notice them pricewise.
