I haven't looked into monitor tech in a couple of years, but when I read about 
the uneven brightness issue in 2009, it was all related to what lighting source 
sat behind the screen. LED backlights were good, CCFL varied with number of 
tubes (the more the better), and with the precision and quality of the prisms 
distributing the light.

I'm pretty sure this still holds, but there may be other factors modulating the 
above.
