My desktop is down for the moment, this is like the third HD failure
I've experienced in the last two years. I think I managed to keep
everything backed up and had a fair amount of warning, but I won't know
until I rebuild the machine. Working on my laptop I been noticing how
much crud is on the screen. It's one of the older ones without a shiny
surface. Any suggestions?

I just use plain water and some super fluffy "Microfiber Ultra Soft Spa Towels" I bought at AutoZone for cleaning my car windows. They were something like $2.99 for a package of 6. Dampen the towel & clean the screen, then go over it with a dry towel.

Power off, of course.

Here's what Toshiba has to say (my current laptop is a Toshiba).

How to properly clean your laptop screen

1. Turn the computer off.

2. Do not touch or press on the screen with your bare hands or
fingers. Oils or grease from your hands can stain or smudge the
screen and may be difficult to remove.

3. Use a soft dry cotton cloth to gently wipe away fingerprints and
smudges from the screen. If this does not completely remove the dirt
and smudges, lightly dampen the cloth with water and try again. Never
spray liquid directly on the screen.

Special cleaning cloths are available and are probably a good
investment. Be very careful that you select a cloth that is free from
any particles or dirt that can damage the screen. Do not use paper
towels, ammonia, or strong cleaners on the screen under any
circumstances.

Try to clean your monitor at least once a month. Who knows, it could
change your perspective on the world.

Note particularly item #2 - one of the reasons I will never have an iPad. They're always covered in greasy fingerprints & it's severe PITA to get them off.
