Ah, thanks for the info, Bruce! I had no idea West Nile was responsible.
That makes sense.
Oddly, despite all the cornfields and other favored haunts in my area,
we've never had many crows at all. In fact, I don't recall ever having
seen one around my house until the last few years -- and even then,
they've been spotty.

Ditto!
Walt, the Blue Jay population was decimated by West Nile virus.
Started in the early 2000's I think, and nuked crows and Jays
especially. I'm seeing both these birds returning here in the last
couple of years, but nothing like they used to be.

Nice, Dave!
We used to have bluejays all over the place when I was a kid, but I've only
seen one or two around here in the past several years. I really wish one or
two would visit my yard to run the mockingbirds off. The robins hold their
own, but the mockingbirds chase everything else away. Bluejays have a way of
putting them in their place, though.

Still a good catch in spite of the feeder "post", Dave.
We have what are called "Scrub Jays" here in northern Calif.. Coloring and
personalities are much like those we experienced in Iowa, but there have no
top knot.
Noisy, intimidating, raucous, bullies.

Subject: Peso When jays attack
Not getting a lot of blue jay shots this year. pretty much like the
others i have taken in the past.
I saw a potential for a bit of a struggle at one of the feeders so i
just pre focused on the feeder and managed to get this shot. I would
have liked it better if the bird was more off the post, but i had no
control over that.:-)
