I kinda do it this way (so far it's been working) if I can't get the tones the way I want 'em on my own from the get-go: 1. Select "autotone" and note that the exposure is way off in the weeds (but note that shadow/highlight/contrast have been modified with respect to each other) 2. Grab the "exposure" slider and expose your subject area appropriately. Mostly that works.
