The birds I have (somewhat shakily) identified as cormorants I've seen both here in Brisbane and in Rome, under a bridge over the Tiber. In Brisbane they certainly like to perch on the piers which support jetties, and which stand some two metres or more out of the water as our river is tidal. We also have had, living on the river close to my place, a Greater Shag (settle down Bob W.!), which I understand is related to the cormorants, and it certainly adopts the spread-wing pose. My observation is that they watch from a vantage point for any indication of fish in the water, then dive and hunt under the surface for as long as five minutes before surfacing for air, then continuing the process until they succeed, or until the fish get away. Unfortunately, my photos of them are not of a standard sufficient to exhibit to this group!

I managed to get some shots with the DA*60-250 but they're all not quite tack sharp so I need to focus check that lens but also need to find that cormorant again in order to get a good shot and finally become a "full patch PDMLer" =) Therefore, I'll appreciate any advice from the experienced what kind of places a cormorant would choose as temporary residence, if any and also what their active hours are, etc. I have a whole weekend to try this so whatever you can throw my way will hopefully help me Cheers Ecke -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
