When I visited Ireland a while ago, I found that the pace you describe as 
"leisurely" (and would be completely a no-brainer when traveling in the U.S.) 
was very difficult to maintain.

Italy might be different, but be warned that the old saying holds:  "In the 
U.S., 100 years is a long time.  In Europe, 100 miles is a long distance"
