that's more correct than you may realise. The French say that English is just French, badly pronounced. While sorta true, it's not entirely, and can lead the unwary into traps - false friends, faux amis - such as thinking that 'une pipe' has all the same meanings in French as 'a pipe' has in English. Une pipe is mostly a pipe of the smoking type (although it can also, crudely, be sucked on - 'faire la pipe' - samong a few other things). A Unix pipe is a metaphor for the type of pipe which in French would probably be un tuyau, une canalisation or une conduite. However! as far as I can gather, Jean LeGique does sometimes use 'pipe' for a Unix pipe - but not UNE pipe (feminine). He appears to use UN pipe (masculine), because the word has been borrowed *back* into French from English.
